The Mars Task Force

A soldier-written poem about the "Men of Mars." The original poem, hand-written on five pages and found between the pages of the book "The Marauders," was written by Pfc. Wade D. Hall of the 475th Infantry, a unit of the Mars Task Force. Beautifully written, it has been transcribed for easier reading or printing. The original hand-written pages can also be viewed. Shared by Kathryn Thomason Cleveland.

CBI Roundup Memorandum

Here is an interesting bit of history related to CBI Roundup, newspaper of the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II.

The page shows a post-war memorandum that appears to be a training exercise from the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The memorandum was issued in June of 1946, after the war and after Roundup had ceased publication.

How he did it is briefly told in this wartime booklet about the Burma campaign from SEAC, newspaper of the Southeast Asia Command.

"This is the story from day to day on probably the most exciting trip of my life." A first-hand account of the first ATC convoy over the recently completed Ledo Road to China in 1945. Unable to send letters home while enroute, William Dawson wrote this day-by-day diary of his experiences in the form of a letter home in a book he kept with him, and later sent home from China. Shared by his daughter, Carol Hoffner.

Actually, nobody got hurt, despite the headline. Roundup crusaded against import duties imposed by the Treasury Department on items sent home by CBI soldiers. They eventually won.

This is one of several "new" Roundup recreations published to the web based on issues from early on in the war. This particular issue is the second Roundup ever published, from September 24, 1942.

With the February 9 issue, it became China Command Post, newspaper of the China Theater of Operations. Most definitely a government propaganda book intended for China's allies in the war against Japan. That's an armed "Miss Free China" shown on the cover of the book at left. I wrote a letter to you last Friday but we couldn't send them as we moved from our first camp, near Calcutta to a camp here at Ledo, India. Ledo is in the northeast part of India. We came up here in Company trucks. We drove the trucks on to flat cars on a train part of the way and we had to stay with the trucks even when we were on the train. The trip was very tiresome but interesting. This Ledo Road that we drove over is a part of the Burma Road and it is fairly good now, although a while back it was terrible. We drove over a mountain that was a little dangerous but not bad if you're careful. The road was very dusty and had a lot of narrow bridges . . .

IBT and CTO Newspapers

In October of 1944 the CBI Theater was split in two coinciding with the recall of General Stilwell to Washington. The two new theaters were the India-Burma Theater (IBT) and the China Theater of Operations (CTO). CBI Roundup became India-Burma Theater Roundup, newspaper of IBT, while The China Lantern served the CTO.

Twenty-two original issues of "The Bull Sheet," newspaper of the Ramgarh Training Center in India. A behind-the-scenes look at American men and women in CBI. No war news, but a wealth of interesting information from Ramgarh, where Americans trained and equipped the Chinese Army in India.

The Best of CBIVA Sound-off

CBI veteran David Dale was editor of the China-Burma-India Veterans Association newsletter, CBIVA Sound-off, from 1981 until the CBIVA was dissolved in 2005. Kin Platt was an established cartoonist prior to the war and continued his craft afterwards. While in the AAF in CBI he used his talent to draw Broad Views, a cartoon strip for the Hump Express, newspaper of the India-China Division of the Air Transport Command. The cartoons usually featured beautiful women, often in various stages of undress, usually discussing some situation arising out of a date with a G.I. The cartoons appeared in most issues of the newspaper. Fifteen of the cartoons are featured on this page.

In May of 1941, LIFE editor Henry R. Luce and his wife, Clare Boothe Luce, traveled to China to meet with Madame and Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and visit the Yellow River front where the Chinese were making a stand against the invading Japanese. Two pictorials came out of the trip: China: To The Mountains is Mr. Luce's story of the trip with photos by Mrs. Luce, originally published in the June 30, 1941 edition (Madame Chiang appears on the cover). Wings Over China is Mrs. Luce's views from the same trip, published in the September 9, 1941 edition.

The Flight of No Return

Over four hundred and fifty planes took the Flight of No Return attempting to cross the Himalayas to China. Their wreckage, strewn across the Hump Route, formed what ominously came to be known as "The Aluminum Trail." This poem by Sunny Young pays tribute to the brave men who set out Over the Hump to China and never made it. From the book, The Aluminum Trail by Chick Marrs Quinn.

The 462nd Bombardment Group was activated on July 1, 1943 and was soon training on the new B-29 bomber. Early in 1944 they headed to Piardoba, India and later took part in the first raids on the Japanese homeland since the Doolittle raid of 1942. They called themselves the Hellbirds. This page contains a recreation of their newspaper, the Hellbird Herald, an above average unit newspaper from CBI.

Super-Fort

In 1944 plans were finalized for basing B-29 Superfortresses in India and China for raids on the Japanese homeland. The "Super-Forts" made the first attacks on Japan since the Doolttle raid of 1942. They also supported operations in China and Burma. To keep their men informed, the XX Bomber Command published the bi-weekly newspaper Super-Fort. This page contains a recreation of the March 5, 1945 issue.

My Life as a G.I. Joe in World War II

Tom Foltz, CBI Veteran of the 789th Engineer Petroleum Distribution Co. (E.P.D.) wrote this memoir of his time as a "G.I. Joe" in the U.S. Army in the CBI Theater of World War II. The story takes you from Ohio, across the Pacific in a Troop Ship to India, up and down "Infinity Line" pipeline, and finally, after three years, back home to "Uncle Sugar."

The Fishwrapper

CBI Roundup was the weekly newspaper of the China-Burma-India Theater. It's editors often referred to it as "the fishwrapper" (fish markets often wrapped fresh fish in newspaper when sold). After the war, former editor Boyd Sinclair, who also wrote the "Confusion Beyond Imagination" series of books about CBI, wrote a story about the founding, the early days, and behind the scenes of Roundup. His story was, of course, titled "The Fishwrapper."

Flight Radio Operator Douglas Devaux's memories of flying the "Valley" and the "Hump" as a soldier in the United Sates Army Air Force during World War II. Doug put together a book, intended for his children and grandchildren, so that they would know more than just the fact that he served in CBI. He shares it here for all to know the flying adventures and the day-to-day life "from the back seat," the radio operator's position, for the Air Transport Command.

Operation Matterhorn
